My Birthday Buddy

Image
Hard to believe this picture was taken 8 years ago! Today was my tenth birthday without Mama.   I've written previously about how Mama made me feel special just for being born.   I wondered if birthdays would ever be special again and there have been a few rough ones over the past ten years.   Today, I decided to remember what I had written about it being a day baptized, so I focused on the celebration of Clare's baptism birthday.   Eight years ago, she was baptized in Christ and today, we celebrated the day as birthday buddies. I spent the morning grocery shopping and preparing our meal.   I needed a crock pot meal since we had a busy evening with mass and a meeting at church.   I tried my stovetop spaghetti and meatballs in the crockpot and it turned out great.   I made some other special foods, like these chocolate-filled raspberries which w...

Baptism Gowns & First Communion Dresses

Image
By this time last year, I was already shopping for our family First Communion dress.   As I have posted before, I like bargains and I will save costs where I can.   Even my wedding dress was a great price.   That wasn't exactly on purpose, as it was the one I wanted at first glance, but I did work the summer before our wedding to pay for it.   My parents had paid for my college education so that I started my career with no college debt, so I thought I could handle paying for the dress. Simple empire waist, with white pearl beading on bodice.   Mama and I made my veil.  There have been a few times, though, when I didn't worry about costs.   One such time was when we purchased the baptism gown that would become our family baptismal gown.   We bought it before our eldest daughter's baptism and it has been used by all three children.   It is beautiful linen with hand-knitted lace trim on the gown an...

Baptism Day and a Day Baptized

Image
My birthday was always such a special day for me.   As far back as I can remember, memories of Mama and September 3rd are entwined.   Big parties, presents, surprises around every corner?   No.   I can only remember having one organized party.   Instead, birthdays were simple family celebrations in our home.   You chose your favorite meal  (for several years I remember having black-eyed peas, hot dogs, pan-fried potatoes, and cornbread) and Mama made the cake of your choice (strawberry when I was very little because it was pink!).   I did not have a store-bought cake until my 18th birthday.   There was usually only one present and of course, the punctual card from Grandma and Grandad, with a crisp dollar bill enclosed (I was one of 19 grandchildren). No, my birthday was special because Mama made it special in other, more important ways.   I remember how happy she was on my birthday and as I grew older, I came to understand th...
